Intumescent Fire Protection

Formation of an insulating layer

Develop a layer of protective substance that works by chemical reaction generated by heat, resulting in swelling and formation of an insulating layer on the surface. This method is typically used on structural steel, although there are systems available for timber and more.

The system used and film weights required are dependent on the protection time required (according to BS 476 Part 20 & 21 - normally 30, 60 or 90 minutes), the dimensions, exposure and location of the item coated.
