Case Study: Tom Howley

Case Study: Tom Howley

An initial desire to reduce VOC emissions resulted in a successful reduction, whilst developing a more user-friendly process.

Tom Howley has established an exceptional reputation for creating exquisite kitchen designs that satisfy a variety of lifestyle needs. With the help of Kortec, they have developed exceptional processes that are user-friendly and reduced their VOC emissions.

Analysis

Assessment of all aspects of the coating process

From an initial analysis, it was clear that Tom Howley was using a hybrid system - a water-based primer and a  solvent-based topcoat. The main issue Tom Howley was facing is the amount of VOC emissions, therefore, their main requirement was the need to reduce these VOC emissions.

The paints they required needed to be versatile to be suitable for different techniques of multiple sprayers. Their 2 pack solvent-based topcoat at the time was not easy to use for on-site manual application (brush/roller).

Implementation

All standard colours matched via KolorteqTM programme

From conducting an analysis it was clear what needed to be improved and the exact features that they required to continue high-quality production. Therefore with the support of our technical team at Kortec, Tom Howley utilised a full single-pack water-based system and trailed this with all sprayers to ensure they could select the optimum products for their projects and production.

Ongoing Client Benefits

Structured assessment on a weekly basis

Following on from the initial implementation stage, Tom Howley has virtually eliminated VOC emissions. Furthermore, they have improved the ease of use for onsite applications, reduced waste with single-pack products and become more user-friendly in an open booth environment.

Kortec continues to support Tom Howley and is currently supporting the move to automatic spray/curing equipment with product/equipment trials being conducted in Italy.

"I have been in this trade for over 40 years and dealt with all the major paint suppliers when Carl from Kortec told me he could guarantee colour matches my thoughts were, I have heard that before! I can honestly say he has been true to his word, and their continuity has been outstanding"

- Alan Ashmore, Factory Manager

"I feel Kortec can be very helpful, if for any reason I have any queries relating to any paint issues that arise or just generally want more information on the paint product, then they are very prompt at getting back to you with a thorough informative answer. Which help us resolve any issues we may have in a quick and efficient manner. I do need to stress that luckily for us these issues are very far and few between."

- Pam Marshall, Sprayshop Manager

Top Obstacles to Consistent Colour
10 Jan, 2024
Consistent paint colour is essential for virtually every painting process – the two main scenarios are: mass production where items from different runs may end up being mixed in a final unit e.g. kitchen doors and bespoke production where the paint requirement can be hard to estimate (or the original size is extended) meaning extra paint is required.
